What turning 21 has taught me....

As many 'big birthdays' someone will have in their lifetime (10th, 16th, 18th etc), I have always felt that turning 21 was the one that amazed me the most. Your 21st is the sign that you are now officially grown up and is celebrated in such a way to signify that you are now a free young adult, ready to fight the world. Since turning 21 last year, a few things have happened that have helped shape me, and teach me a few things...

Although when I celebrated this big birthday, I was partying away in Kavos with my friends without a care in the world, I have became a MUCH more mature person now, both in my work and personal life. When I was younger, I was quite shy and never felt confident enough to stand up for myself or take on new challenges, always feeling the need for someone to guide me along whatever path I was taking. Even now, one of my biggest regrets was being so shy when I was growing up. However I think if you ask anyone what they were like when they were younger, no matter who they are, they will all be saying the exact same. For me, turning 21 really helped me come out of my shell and my confidence has came on leaps and bounds allowing me to progress throughout my life and be responsible for getting me to where I am today...

Now I am not saying that when your 21st comes along, your life will be all responsibilities and that innocence you had growing up will magically disappear. However you will begin to appreciate the little things in life that might have passed you even just a year or two ago. Although maybe when you just turned 18 you were out every night with your mates.... that isn't maybe possible now. With work, study and family life beginning to creep in.. even just a night in with friends is special, and yo will realize that spending time with the people you care about is what is important, not what you do or where you go! I now truly appreciate these little moments and treasure the times I spend with friends and family.

One thing that I feel I have learned since turning 21, and probably one of the most important things I have learned, is not to fret about what others think of you. I for definite have developed a 'care free' attitude, which has helped me do a lot of things I wouldn't have felt comfortable with or been nervous about when I was growing up. I think this is one of the best ways to view life, as it will let you try new things and push you to being the best you can be.
Even starting this blog was something I wanted to do for years, however it always worried me what others would have thought about me. However when the day came that I decided to go for it and give it a go, I realized how much I loved it. It made me realize how many other things I could try, without worrying what others had to say.... at the end of the day, it is your life!

Lets not forget how exciting it is to turn 21. For most people, it is the perfect opportunity to take control of your life and do what you want to do. Whether you want to travel, get your first flat, go for that dream job, or start a family... turning 21 signifies that you are now grown up and it is the perfect chance to take control, without someone there to talk you down. It can be nerve wracking, however it is such an exciting time, and something you will only ever experience once, so taking advantage of this time while you can is a definite....

Whether you have celebrated this big moment in your life or not, it is defintely bound to make some changes to your life for the better. It is a chance to break away and take your life into your own hands, to grow up and take on new responsibilities.. things you would never have been able to do when you were younger. If you have celebrated your 21st, let me know what it has taught you....
